Advices from the Solomon Islands state that suspicions have been aroused owing to the sudden appearance of a Japanese schooner named the Adele. The captain when questioned as to the visit replied: "We continue to look." The matter was reported to Mr Woodford, British Commissioner, who found the Adele at Utopia, and had her seized and towed to Tulgai, where the captain was ordered to pay £3OO for being engaged in collecting trocaa shell without a license. The money was not forthcoming, and the schooner was confiscated. The captain is coming to Sydney to consult the Japanese Consul. It is reported that he previously took two shipments of shell to Noumea.

Miss Grace Cope, an English journalist, and organiser of the technical schools in Wales, is visiting Sydney, and sails for New Zealand on the 23rd inst. (Received 10.15 a.m.) Melbourne, July 17. * In connection with tho recent cafe raids, it was alleged that certain constables who were on duty outside entered the premises to secure free supper. The result of an enquiry is that three constables have been find £3, and two othrs 30s, and a, black mark has also been placed on their record.

Dr. Robert Bridges has been ap pointed Poet Laureate.

The new Poet Laureate was born in 1844. He was educated at Eton and Oxford, and afterwards studied medicine at St. Bartholomew's, London. He held various hospital positions in London, retiring finally in 1882. He has published various plays and poems, an essay on Milton's prosody and a critical essay on Keats.
