STRATFORD HIGH SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

Tho ordinary monthly mooting of flie committee was held last r*ght. Present —Messrs Skpglund (chairman), McMillan, Jackson, Jones, Fookcs, Hancock and Staples, HEADMASTER’S REPORT. ‘ '' , #• The headmaster (Mr Tyrer) reported under date 14th July as follows: For the quarter ended 30th June, the average attendance in our primary department was 514 i in our secondary department 125. That is 639 for the whole school and only 80 per cent, of our register number. Many schools in this district secure attendances of from 90 per cent to 95 per cent of the number on their rolls, so that our must be considered barely satisfactory. Seyqi'q colds were prevalent among ovu little children, however, tor the greater part of June, and kept many of them away and this accounts partly for our position. We have also on the school roll a number— fortunately a very small one—of children who. are habitually irregular, and the attendance of these for the last quarter was very poor indeed. The truant officer of the Education Board recently visited the district, and I understand has taken action against a number of parents. The Wellington schools football team propose to play a game here on the 4th September. Arrangements will need to be made to billet out the visitors who were so good to our lads when in Wellington last year. The work in our Technical school is going on satisfactorily. Continuation classes as well as classes in dressmaking and shorthand, one going on, for a second term, A good class in mechanical engineering is working, and I have every hope of opening a good class in millinery during the next few weeks. The report was adopted. It was resolved to write the Wellington teachers to alter the date of the proposed-match as otherwise it would clash with the TaranakiAuckland Jnxture at New Plymouth. VISITING COMMITTEE. ' The Visiting Committee reported that everything was working satisfactorily. The continued cold weather makes the question of heating arrangements of the school rooms still an urgent matter. Experiments on the part of the Board having established the fact that the stoves can be made a success by placing them more in the centre of the room, and carrying up therefrom inside the ; rooms a good length of stove pipe from which tlje heat could -radiate) it behoved-the Board to take every •steps to have this necessary and simple improvement effected. The caretaker reported that only three cords remained of .the, eight cords of firewood provided .at the commencement of the winter. The..headmaster also wished a few holes in tho courtyard filled in and tarred over. At present, owing to,the holes, the frost got beneath the asphalt and broke .-'t up. The caretaker also wished gravel for the technical school paths, so long promised, and tjie replacement of the broken gate.—Report adopted. Resolved to call for tenders for . the supply of five cords of.,firewood; that the Education Board be written to reporting the completion to the heating stoves, and that Mr Smart attend to the matter of the broken gate, GENERAL. Accounts amounting to £2l 3s were passed for payment. The secretary of the Education Board, notified the payment of £2B (capitation allowance for June quarter) into the hank to the Committee’s credit,.—Received.
