LIGHT RAILWAYS.
PRIVATE ENTERPRISE ADVOCATED. [Per Press Association.] Wllington, July 16. The question of lignt railways for rural districts came up for discussion at the Farmers’ Conference to-day. hi introducing the subject, Mr Ross .Auckland) said he did not advocate private railways as a whole, hut he thought advantages- were decidedly in | favour of branch railways being con- | 5 true ted by private enterprise, as tne j Mate did‘not build railways as eminently as private companies, and he ,vas strongly of opinion that lignt railways would confer a great bencht on the rural district and back blocks. After discussion, the following .notion was carried—“ That the conference urge the Government to adopt t progressive policy for the construction of branch lines and the development of the system of light railways, uid' in cases where the Government cannot undertake their construction, to afford facilities for the work being indertaken by a local body or by private enterprise on the lines ol tne Belgian system.
