OUR HINTERLAND

THE MAIL TO OHURA

The Stratford Chamber of Commerce has interested itself in the question of mail communication uith Ohura, and the matter was discussed at last night's meeting.

.Mr James reported that two Tatu gentlemen had seen him regarding the provision of a mail service from Kohuratahi to Ohura. The Government has called for tenders for the service, Init no tenders were received. The present position is that within a few weeks, on the completion of a bridge, there will he a route available for a coach service for the whole distance. The man who carried the mail from Te Koura to Ohura was willing to take up the service. Mr Kirkwood said the Chamber had asked the Ohura people tt) let the Chamber know when they were viiting to the Government so that the Chamber could write at the same

time

Mr Richards said there was a danger of the matter being dropped if left to the Tatu people. Stratford was just as anxious to have communication.

Mr Kennedy said it was now very irritating, a letter addressed to Ohura having to go round by Auoklanic*. About a week elapsed before a reply could lie received.

Mr Kirkwood moved that the Chamber communicate with the Ohura County Council, the Whangamomona County Council, and others interested with a view to immediate joint action in the matter,,

Mr Kennedy said the matter of the telephone communication was just as important. The telephone at present run only as far as Tahora. Mr Richards said that the Government had previously refused to extend the telephone.

Regarding the mail service Mr Richards moved as an amendment that the Chamber write at once to the Government and advise the Tatu settlers of the action.

It was stated that the mail already ran to Tahora and that all that was required was an extension from Tahorc to Ohura. The amendment was carried.
