o DISTRICT COMM LITE E. The Committee met at -New Plymouth last night. Trainers’ licenses for the ensuing season were granted to the following:—R. Barlow, Gervast George, R. Brough, P, Coffey, O. Cox, J. Fryer, and J. Juney. Jockeys’ licenses were granted as follows:

Sievier, Sievier’s cross-examination of Wootton led to much cross talk, especially when defendant questioned Wootton abopt his turf associates in Australia. Wootton admitted that he recommended Hayes as a trainer in England, and that Hayes subsequently was convicted of an offence.

The judge reprimanded Sievier and Wootton for rude questions and answers. V

Sievier asked Wootton to produce his betting records. Wootton replied that he had none.

Sievier suggested that certain poisons wno had neen warned off had only practiced what plaintiff taught them. Wootton interjected: “It’s a lie.” Sievier : “You have had more jockeys put down for foul riding than any other English stable." “ Wootton: u My boys have been suspended but they have not lost prestige. They are employed by the best people.” The Judge: “But the best people may not have a choice.”—Wootton: ‘They want the best jockeys.” The crowd frequently applauded Wootton and the judge threatened to cfeitr the Court.

Wobtton regarded foul riding ku the case of lads as only anxiety. r One of his apprentices was fined £SO for' not weighing in after winning a race wkrcn was due to carelessness. Witness wag temporarily ordered out of the box for interrupting counsel, who was addressing the judge relative to the production of Wootton’s bank hooks. The judge ordered their production. Plaintiff, resuming, said it was downright concoction to say his soon ,pulled Stickey in the Cambridgeshire iff 1907. Witness admitted his earnings averaged £SOOO yearly. Lord. Derby, in evidence, said on one occasion ho thought Frank Woottoh‘had made the best use of his horse, hut he never suspected him of pulling the animal, which was not an easy one .to deal with.

The hearing of the case was adjourned.

WELLINGTON WINTER MEETING [Pkk Press Association.] „Trentham, July 16. The weather is calm and dull for the opening of the Wellington winter meeting. The attendance is good, but the going is rather holding. The visitors include the vice-regal party. Results : Stewards Handicap. Kaniki 1, Gnome 2, Styx 3. Westerly, Daylight Bill, WTmfyge and Waiaio fell. Time, smin 48 2-osec. , Trial' Plate.—Tvew 1, Pavlova 2, Qporge 3. Scratched: Floss, Kielder, Walderiiear, Discussion, and Toione. W'on by three lengths, half a length hetwpen second and third. Time Imin I 19 4-ssec. Steeplechase.—Nedra 1. Spaniard 2, Native 3. Scratched: Hoanga (who broke down after a gallop this morn-and-Fond Memory. A’ groat race ended in a fine finish-between the first and "second Lockes, Nedra winning by a length, Native three or four length's away. There was .splendid jumping. No accident occurred'till the third round, wherr Ivia Ora. fell. Hauterc ran off early in the race. The last to finish were Red McGregor, Leolanter, and Waitarere. Dorando was in a good position at thp last fence, but ran off. Time, 7rnin 7 l-sseo.
