MRS PANKHURST’S CHALLENGE

Mrs Pankhurst, speaking. ■ at the Pavilion, declared that Parliament must give them votes or kill the women. She challenged the Government to kill them or give them their freedom.
Suddenly, detectives, with their heads down to protect, their faces against male suffragists brandishing sticks and women using’ hatpins and umbrellas, dashed into a solid gioup of women, in the centre of which was Miss Kenny. A violent struggle ensuedy men and women being bowled over in attempting to rescue her. ‘ Eventually Miss Kenny was forced into a taxi-cab and the detectives drove off amid execration and shouts of “Shame!” from their comrades and from the crowd of women who, with the detectives, bore evidences of the fray. * Mrs Pankhurst • was not arrested, having escaped during the confusion.
