ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.
BURNED TO DEATH. [Per Press Association.] Auckland, July 11. Ernest Edward Cooke, 35, baker, residing at Northcote, was burned to death last night in a fire which destroyed ’hisVrfsidence and. furniture. It is supposed that the fire was caused by the Upsetting of a lamp which' Cooke was Using to prepare gruel. At 11.30 his wife discovered the’ kitchen in flames and Cooke in a state of collapse and his clothing ablaze. A neighbour named Fitzpatrick made a gallant attempt to rescub Cooke, but was beaten back by the smoke ami flames. Cooke was incinerated, his reTnhfnfebtofemg found this morning in the debris. The house was insured for £175 in tbe'Alliance. The furniture was not insured.
