FEAR OF EARTHQUAKE.

CALL ON THEIR GODS FOR AID

The Tongau Group was visited by a violent earthquake on July 3. At Vavau, Hapai, and Nukvalfa, tho ground rocked violently for two minutes. The natives were panic-stricken, calling on their gods for aid. A concrete reservoir at Haapai, containing the native water suply, cracked from top to bottom, and the water ran to waste. Otherwise, the damage done was trifling, but the beach at Haapai was covered for two feet deep with grey pumice, and on other beaches similar deposits were left by the sea some days later.
