SUICIDE BY SHOOTING

Edwin James Le Grove, managing director of Le Grove and Lawrence Co., Ltd., of Lambton Quay, was found dead shortly before 1 o’clock this afternoon. A few minutes after 12 o’clock, one of his employees heard what subsequently proved to have been the report of a revolver. No notice was taken of this, however, but subsequently, Lb Grove being missed, a search was made in the lavatory on the second floor of the building in which deceased’s office is situated. He was discovered dead, with a wound in his right temple, and a revolver lying beside him, two chambers of which had been discharged. One cartridge had apparently been fired. In Grove, who was engaged for part of nis time as Parliamentary shorthand committee clerk, called at the ofrice jf Parliament Buildings this moru.ag, and on ascertaining that there was nothing for him that morning, went down to his business premises. He remained there for a litle while, and then left tiie office without speaking to anybody. Deceased was sufiering from nervous prostration, lor wnicq iie had recently.been treated in a private hospital.
CUT HIS THROAT
Christchurch, July 9
A case of determined suicide was reported to the police to-day from the monumental works yard at the corner of Hereford and Madras streets. The body of a man was found in a sitting position, with the head thrown slightly back, and the throat cut from ear to ear. A blood-stained razor was lying alongside. From letters found on the body, the deceased was identified as Joseph Smart (60), and the letters indicated that the deceased had evidently contemplated suicide. He was well-known in Lyttelton, where no was employed by the Railway Department as a casual laborer on the wharves. At the inquest a verdict was returned that the deceased committed suicide by cutting his throat with a razor while temporarily of unsound mind.
A PAINFUL ACCIDENT
Wanganui, July 9
A young lady named Sutherland, residing in Urquhart street, was severely injured this evening, as the result of a collision between her bicycle and a motor car. She sustained concussion of the brain and a broken nose, and will probably lose the sight of ono eye.
