WASHED OVERBOARD

A trimmer on the steamer Waitomo, named Napier, about 40, whose relatives reside in Dunedin, was washed overboard on Saturday at 2 a.m., when the vessel was two days out from Sydney. It was pitch dark at the time and a tremendous sea was running. Nothing could be done to save him.
CUT HIS THROAT
Christ-church, July 9
J. Smart, an elderly man, was found dead in a builder's yard in the city with his throat cut. Men were working in the yard for two hours before they saw the body.
