YESTERDAY’S SITTING

[Per Press Association.] Wellington, July 7

At the afternoon sitting of the Unity Congress an amendment to the strike danse moved by the Hon. J. T. Paul, “That every local union shall have an opportunity, in accordance with its rules, to declare its decision on such lockout or strike,” was rejected by 190 votes to 101. The financial clauses of the constitution were adopted, and the Congress adjourned.

TO-DAY’S BUSINESS

Wellington, July 8

The Congress resumed after having adjourned for five minutes in order to demonstrate their sympathy with the Johannesburg strikers. The debate on the finance clauses terminated after a number of amendments had been * rejected. Clause Jo was amended to add after the word delegates, “Each delegate shall be a bona fide member.” Considerable discussion took place as to whether the additional words “or official’ he also added. Finally, it was decided to omit the words “or official,” the delegates saying they were out to kill professional representation. This completed the debate on the clauses of the constitution.
