Taranaki and Wanganui played their second game this season at Hawera on Saturday, in good football weather, about two thousand spectators being present. The game was fast and exciting throughout, and it waF only in the second spell that the home team began to pile up their big margin. There was a slight breeze flowing down the field, and it was expcted that Wanganui would make a good fight in the second spell with the wind at their back, but the visitors had to change their team owing to Baddeley, one of their five-eighths, injuring his shoulder and having to retire.' The Taranaki team was also altered for the second spell, Roberts going from wing three-quarter to fiveeighth, exchanging places with Cade, who signalised his first appearance in the position in representative football by scoring five tries. The game was capably controlled by Mr J. S. McKay. Wanganui kicked off, and very soon play was near their line, where Cade nearly got over through faulty tackling. Wanganui cleared and sot up a number of vigorous forward rushes, one of which was stopped when looking very dangerous by a clever mark by Brown. A little later Ward beat a couple of men and passed to Whit-i tington, who scored. 801 l failed to convert.—Taranaki 3, Wanganui 0. Taranaki now showed up on the aggressive, but one attack was foiled by McLeod hanging on too long. A nice Wan ganui passing bout was spoiled by T Leahy knocking on. Wanganui pressed for a little longer, but then play gravitated to the visitors’ twenty-five, where the ball passed from Brown, to Cameron, to McLeod, who dived over. Hill failed with the kick. Taranaki 6, Wanganui 3. The spell was closed with fart play, Roberts failing with a kick from a penalty. I The second spoil opened in lively! fashion, each set of forwards doing j good work. The barks also worked hard, and play went up and down the field rapidly. Tamu led his forwards well into the visitors’ twenty-j five and nearly scored. A little later Roberts kicked a nice goal from a j penalty near the side line.—Taranaki
