I ■ • Messrs. Fawkener/ Wildermoth, Bradley, Lundon, Barlow, Hatton, and H Hill, wore elected members of the Whangamomona School Committee. There were 13 nominees. Mr T. Brad- ' ley was elected chairman, Lieutenant-Colonel Powley, of the Salvation Amy, will leave England shortly to take up the position of chief secgebary of the Dominion, vice Li ..utenant-Colonel Fisher, who jjas been appointed to the foreign office in England.
Mr J. Lomas, Secretary of Labor, is among the Government officials who will retire this year. Mr Lomas joined the Department in 1891, the year of its foundation, and became secretary on Mr.Tregear’s retirement two years ago.—P.A.
Mr J. D. Woodford, secretary of th® Wellington Chess Club, and formerly of Christchurch, who was well known among the chessmen of New Zealand, died in the Wellington Hospital on Saturday evening as a result of. an attack of pneumonia. He was Honorable Treasurer of the Christchurch. Exhibition Chess Congress.
Commissioner Richards, of the Salvation Army, leaves Wellington fov Auckland to-day to meet Commissioner Lamb, international foreign secretary for Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. On Wednesday at Auckland, a maternity hospital will be opened. This hospital is said to be the most np-to-date of its kind in the dominion.
Captain dampen, who has made himself highly popular both among the Territorials and the residents generally since he has held . the position of adjutant of the Xlth. Regiment (Taranaki Rifles), has now finished his duties in Stratford, his successor. Lieut. McDonnell, from Whangarei, having arrived on Saturday to take up the duties of adjutant. At the Stratford Club on Saturday evening, Captain Lampen was farewelled by the members of the Club, Mr R. Spence, in the absence of the President and Vice-president, presenting him, with a handsome travelling rug. Mr Spence voiced the esteem in which Captain Dampen was held by all members, and Captain dampen, in bis reply, expressed his regret at having to leave the many good friends he had made in Stratford. Mr Starr King Mason, a Christchurch young man, who has previously met with success as a (writer \of plays suitable for the film, business, has a .. further letter, dated ; May 13, from the Vitagraph. Captain Robert Falcon Scott left estate valued 1 for-iprdhate of the 1 gross value of £3231 > 1 as fat as at present can be ascertained-. • The wiirhas'jus* been proved in London, and he is said to have died on March '29, 1912, in the Antarctic regions. His widow. Edith Agnes Kathleen Lady Scott, of 174 Buckingham Palace road, S.W.. is the acting executrix, and probate has been renounced by his brother-in law, the Right Hon; William Gray Elligon-Macartney, Deputy-master and Comptroller of the Royal Mint, formerly M.P. for South Antrim, and now Governor of Tasmania- The wil 1 I .is dated in London, July, 1910 (immediately before his departure on the expedition). Captain Scott left aP his securities deposited with 'Messrs I ' Woodhead, 44 Charing Cross, upon
trust for his mother, Mrs Hannah Scott, for life, with remainder to hir wife, and he left all other of his property to his wife absolutely.
