News has been received that the warship Torch, which recently sailed for the Islands, after being overhauled at Sydney, arrived at Noumea with her boilers in a defective condition It transpires that the hurried departure of H.M.S. Pyramus from New Zealand was due to her being ordered to Noumea for the purpose of assisting in the repairs to the Torch and enquiring into the cause of the breakdown. ... Melbourne, June 26. A telegram from Waragul states that' there has apparently been a remarkable inflation of Jones’ estate, mentioned in the cables. Jones lived there for many years, and wms a sep-ond-hand dealer and money-lender. He died in April. The Curator of Intestate Estates has pbtained a rule to administer it at a little over £2OOO. (Received 8.20 a.m.) Sydney, June 27. The Cabinet has modified its scheme for increasing railway fares and freight by reducing the extra revenue to £129,000. (Received 11.20 a.m.) Perth, June 27. Parliament has been opened. The Governor’s Speech promised the reintroduction of electoral reforms, local option, irrigation, amending of the land and income tax, and Bills to further railway and other development works were outlined. Supply was passed, and both Houses then adjourned until July 29. Melbourne. June 27. It is practically certain that the State’s revenue for the financial year will be past the ten million mark, thus establishing a record. (Received 9.5 a.m.) Sydney, June 27. Judge Murray, Lieutenant-Governor of Papua, is visiting Australia with the object of obtaining increased grants to develop the territory. At a banquet in his honor, he urged that valuable w'ork had already been done in the way of development. He spoke in high terms of praise of the great future before this new Imperial asset.
