BATTLE OF THE ROUTES.
0 THE OPUNAKE EAILWAY. AN INGLEWOOD VIEW. Under the heading, "That Railwaj Route," the Inglewood Record write* editorially as follows:—"Eltham is again on the move in the direction of getting the route of the proposed Opunake Railway fixed to the "reserved route," the Chamber of Commerce having written to the Member for Eginont, Mr Wilkinson, asking him to use his best endeavours to have this done. It is unfortunate that Eltham cannot'let well alone, and leave the fixing of the route to the Govern- \ ment and avoid giving them a peg on which to hang their hat of delay. Whatever Eltham and its various local bodies may wish- with regard to the route will not, in the end—if they ever reach an end—make the slightest difference in the matter of route. The route which offers the best chance of the greatest profit on the original outlay and the line's upkeep, according to information obtained by their experts will unquestionably be the route adopted, and the Government's experts will not be swayed one way or the other by any mere parochial pressure brought to bear by biased commercial or interested residents in any town. Everyone knows full well that a railway from Opunake to the main line is of the most vital importance to every dweller in the whole district, more especially of course to "the primary producers and those ratepayers who have the present burden of upkeeping the roads; and to postpone this highly important work for thepake of any local jealousy or aggrandisement will be the most fataPpolicy possible, and a hideous wrong to fflSsi ftfelflNWH a hideous wrong to every resident in the radius .■se?sw3;4| apdfr Colliding ought to be allowed to interfere with , its formation at the earliest possible * moment. We .aj.e..pleased tq note that Mr Wilkinson has a mind of his own and is not afraid to let it be known, and at the same time to avoid leaving : his constituents in. any .doubt ,as, to his intentions. ■,..-, ~ < i, ,*mho ' ■>':• iOOI- : iWJ '' 1 ' V'iiii inii Hi niiW'M 1 n
