PRESIDENT POINCARE

The Prince of Wales welcomed President Poincare at Portsmouth. The King and members of the Cabinet met him at Victoria Station. Great crowds greeted the Royal party with ovations along the route to the palace. Many admirals, including Admiral Patey, welcomed the Prince of Wales to Portsmouth.
GUNNERS BLOWN TO BITS
Paris, June 24
A salute of a hundred guns was fired at Fort Roule. Eight men were wounded of whom four are expected to die. The lieutenant commanding the firing party admits that the cartridges were left near the gun contrary to the regulations. .When the friction tubo was blown back, it fell amidst the reserve cartridges, and a frightful explosion ensued among the group of gunners. The leg of one man was blown out of the fort and fell hundreds of feet below. Two men regained consciousness and received absolution before they died. SCOTT'S COLLECTIONS. Two hundred cases of Scott's collections have reached the Natural History Museum. There is a particular interest in a'box of fossils found on a sledge which Scott marked at the Pole, knowing it would become hidden by snow. A TRYING EXPERIENCE. The barque Glenmark. when in midAtlantic, had her ballast shifted, and threatened to heel over. The captain and the captain's daughter were two days in momentary expectation of being washed away by the high seas. The seamer Darnholme then saw her signals of distress. Her boats throughout the day attempted to reach the vessel, and finally all were rescued by a life-line. The captain's daughter was dragged half a mile through the water and rescued in an exhausted condition.
