TRADE WITH CANADA.
NEW ZEALAND ALIVE TO THE BENEFITS.

The, Chamber of Commerce Congress adopted a resolution asking the Federal Government to take immediate steps to re-establish a direct steamship service between Vancouver and Australia. The mover urged that this was needed in order to secure a growing trade with Canada. It was a business proposition and would soon repay itself. Mr J. Paxton said that after spending money up to a paying point in the service, Australia had quietly sat down and allowed New Zealand to develop and get the benefit of Australia’s expenditure... It. was a grave reflection on the Commonwealth administration that such ;a .thing should | J { ' If J’ I n be allowed. jXew Zealand had contracted for a limited term. But the Government was behind it, and when the time came, it was well known that'the contract would be renewed. (Received 8.25 a.m.)
The Congress resolved that it was imperative in the interests of trade generally that the Commonwealth Government should take, action to attain a closer * Commercial union with Canada, New -Zealand, hind South Africa.
