Colonel Heard, Chief of the General Staff, will assume command of the d.:..;ce forces of the Dominion during the absence of General Godley in England.

Mr C. P. Skerrett, the well-known Wellington KC, who is an enthusiastic shot, arrived in the district professionally on Thursday and is at present enjoying a few days' shooting around Stratford.

Mr J. Jackson, who was for some years a settler on Pembroke Road, and who has been resident in Auckland for the past year, is at present on a visit to Stratford.

Sir James Carroll is reported to bo making an excellent recovery from his recent illness'. Be is now able to see a few of his friends occasionally, and hopes to be well enough to leave his bed next week.

Dr. H. W. Robertson has resigned his position as senior house surgeon at the Wellington Hospital. This has been' accepted with regret, and the hospital committee decided yesterdaj to recommend the Board to appoint Dr. Mitchell as junior house surgeon. Dr. Robertson arrives in Stratford on Tuesday to take over Dr. Carbery's practice during the latter's stay in the Old Country.

Mr D. L. A. Astbury, the Liberal candidate at the late by-election for Egmont, at a representative and enthusiastic meeting at Eltham last night, was made a presentation by the Egmont Liberal League, of a purse of sovereigns running into three figures. During the evening a vote of condolence and sympathy was passed with Lady Guinness in her recent bereavement, and expressing regret at the great loss suffered by the Dominion by the death of Sir Arthur Guinness. '

St. Philip's Church (Sydney) was the scene of an evening wedding on Wednesday, 2nd inst., when Canon Bellingham performed the marriage ceremony between Rawdon C, Hopkins,: of Errowanbang, Carcoar, only son of Mr and Mrs F. R. C. Hopkins, and Dorothy, eldest daughter-of the late G.; Cooper ; barrister, of Auckland,. New Zealand. The bride, who waa given away by Mr J. Harley M'Laughlan, wore her travelling dress of white crepe meteor, and a white hat of j velours and satin ornamented With, weeping plumes. She also wore a--.duster diamond ring, the gift of the>'bridegroom. Miss Dorothy Cameron, who was in attendance, was in white crepe de chine and guipure lace, worn with a hat of white veloure and crepe de chine. Her gift from the bridegroom was a pearl and diamond brooch. Mr R. Fegan acted as best'man, and Mr Fleming as groomsman'.

• Dr. Carbery ia'to leave Stratford on Tuesday next on a holiday trip to England, and it has been decided t<take the occasion to make a presentation'to him in recognition of his services to the town. This decision was come to at a meeting of citizens held in the Borough Council Chambers last night. The Mayor (Mr W. P. Kirkwood), who presided, said the de siro to honor Dr. Carbery was widespread, and the Mayor voiced the opinion that Dr. Carbery was entitlec to all the honor the citizens coidd bestow, being a fine type of citizen and of long standing in the town. On the motion of Mr N. J. King, second ed by Mr W. H. H. Young, it wa? decided that a presentation from the citizens be made in

the Municipal Chambers on Monday, the presentation to be made by the Mayor. Mr D. J. Malone was elect ed'secretary and the following committee was appointed:—The Mayor (Mi W. P.
