DISAPPOINTMENT AT REEFTON
Greymouth, June 6.
Large crowds from the Reef tori dis trier, came to Greymouth to-day tc visit the New Zealand. It rained heavily in the early part of the day, and i. heavy sea on the bar prevented the tender ships going out of the river. The battleship gave a searchlight display to-night, and afterwards sailed for Westport. ARRIVAL OFF WESTPORT. Westport, June G. The battleship New Zealand arrived in tin 4 roadstead from the Grej roadstead to-night. A largo numbei )f children from the mining townships have arrived in town to inspect tht man-o'-war to-morrow, and are billeted out amongst the townspeople. Other contingents are expected in the morning. It is very questionable whethej the sea will be sufficiently smooth tonorrow to allow the residents to get iboard the battleship. Boisterous iveather has been experienced for ;omo days, but a slight improvement s now taking place. A HANDSOME SURPLUS. PRIZES FOR THE MEN. Christchurch, Juno 7. After a settlement of the accounts in connection with the H.M.S. New Zealand festivities, the local committee lias a surplus of £6OO. A sum of £SOO will be invested for prizes for the men on the warship, and Captain Halsey will be asked to suggest how the interest can be best expended.
AT WESTPORT TO-DAY. UNFAVORABLE WEATHER. Westport, June 7. The New Zealand arrived at Westport roadstead from Grey mouth this morning. The official party left in i tug at 9 a.m. to communicate. As the Tutanakei was not available, it was decided not to take children to the roadstead. They are being conveyed by train to the end of the breakwater, from where a view of the warship is obtainable. The weather is bad. Many country children are in town, and are being entertained at free picture shows and being supplied with refreshments.
