Before the season ended, some 300 machines were inspected thoroughly, pulled to pieces, and the reports on their state had been sent to Wellington. Only. 23 per cent, of those machines were clean, 50 per cent, were absolutely bad, and in a very serious condition Indeed. There were over 4000 machines in use in New Zealand, and if the result of the tests so far as they had gone was any indication, then not less than half of them were absolutely bad in point of-cleanliness. Challenged by the meeting, Mr Cuddie described the condition of some of the machines as revealed by examination, first asking the Press not to ' publishi particulars, which, in one case, were revolting.
