A CHILD'S DEATH.
BACKBLGCK 3 HARDSHIPS. QUESTION OF .MEDICAL AID. The residents Out East have, for a long time agitated with the idea of getting a resident medical man in theii midst, but so far without avail; and at intervals cases come under public notice which emphasise the needs ol country settlers in the East in this respect. '1 he latest case to attract attention is that of a child which died yesterday while being conveyed to Stratford to receive medical attention. The little one (aged about two months) was the child of Mr E. Ellis, a labourer employed onthe Public Works Department’s works at Kohuratahi. The child became ill on Monday, and was doctored as far as the parents were able, but as the child was no better on Tuesday, it was decided to bring it to Stratford. A start was accordingly made early yesterday morning, but before the train had reached Huiroa the child passed away. The parents believe the child was suffering from pneumonia, but a post mortem examination was held to-day to discover the cause of death. An inquest is being held at the Courthouse this afternoon.
