His Excellency the Governor, Lord Liverpool, who was in the Rifle Brigade (British Army), has accepted the post of honorary colonel of the Taranaki Rifles.
Mr Arthur Coxhead has, according to a notification in the latest Gazette, been appointed a member of the Taranaki Land Board. VMr V.. IA. Trask, lately stationed at 'Whakatane, has assumed duty in the Stratford Post Office, replacing Mr TV. H. Binley, who has been transferred to Wakatane.
Captain Ernest Gaunt, C.N.G., H.N., has been appointed aide-de-camp to the King. Captain Gaunt is a son of the late Judge Gaunt, of Melbourne, and has had a distinguished naval career. He was in command of H.M.S. Cambrian, of the Australian station.
Mr W. E. Jones, who for the past two years has been connected with the Jegal firm of Russell and Anthony, Christchurch, is re-joining Mr W. G. Malone's staff at Stratford, where he will manage the departments of Common Law, State Advances, and Conveyancing. Mr Jones was previously seven years with the firm of Malone, Anderson, and Johnston.
Mr James Allen was welcomed home from his recent trip by a large and ■enthusiastic meeting under the auspices of the Women’s Branch of the Reform League in the Town Hall, Auckland, last night. Among those present were the Premier (Mr Massey] and his colleagues (Messrs Rliodes, Herries, and Dr. Pomare), and several district M.P’s.
The remains of the late Mr Reginald Bell, the victim of the recent fatal accident in Fentbn Street, were interred at the Ivopuatama Cemetery yesterday afternoon. The premises of Mr Newton King were closed in the afternon as a mark of respect, and thirty-two members of Mr King’s Stratford, New Plymouth and Kaponga staffs were included in the cortege. The pall-bearers were Messrs H. E. Abraham, L. Riera, H. Ashton, J. Hignett, W. L. Lawrence and A. Prentice. Before the cortege proceeded to the cemetery a short seivice was held at Holy Trinity Cluuch by the Rev. W. A. Butler.
Mr J. 0. Williamson, the theatrical magnate of Australia, was a passenger on the s.s. Ventura, which arrived at ’Frisco from Sydney at the end of April. 'According to “The Rounder” of May 3, a theatrical journal published at Los Angelos, California, during the trip over Mr Williamson was suddenly stricken with heart trouble and Bright’s disease, and for a time his condition gave forth grave doubts as to his arriving in San Francisco alive. On arrival ho was taken to the McNutt Hospital, and with the proper medical attention was soon out of immediate danger. Late advices from the hospital authorities state that he was on the road to recovery, and would not be long convalescing.
