Editor George Newott retracted the libel on Mr Roosevelt, published in the Iron Ore newspaper, and apologised in court. Mr Roosevelt asked the jury to give nominal damages. The jury awarded six cents, complying with Mr Roosevelt's request. Under the Michigan laws, Mr Roosevelt bears his own costs of tho trial. THE JUDGE'S REMARKS. (Received 8.15 a.m.) New York, June 1. The judge directed the jury to return a verdict assessing nominal damages, hecause, although Mr Roosevelt was fully entitled to exemplary damages, ho pleaded for defendants, and said that he was in favor of, and was willing to forego damages, if his character was vindicated. The judge held that Newett thought he was doing a public service by calling attention to tho supposed failing of a public man.
