; Mt. and Mrs French, of Mariaia, who'.are * leaving for Hawera, ifvere presented oh Thursday evening with a thermos flask and silver casket respectively by the members of the Orchestral Society, of which organisation Mr and Mrs French were the founders, and in the development of which they had devoted much time and trouble.

The Follies, that live well-known band of entertainers, will make a return visit to Stratford on Thursday next, sth inst. An entirely new and original programme will be presented, and amongst other novelties will be the latest American Ragtime success, "The Hypnotising Mar,'' which has been a furore whenever presented. An original burlesque on melodrama, which was written for The Strand Theatre, London, will be included in the, programme, and all the popular artists will render new numbers. The Company consists of Misses O'Keefe, Edgar and Lussaine, Messrs O'Keefe, Black and Steyne. Popular prices will be oharged.

Mr White, an engineer working at the Pihama factory, had a very narrow escape on Thursday (states the Opunake Times). He was working on the top of the penstock when the wrench he was using broke, and losing his balance he fell backwards ar down the penstock a distance of 23 feet. In his fall his head struck a beam with the result that he landed at the bottom in a sitting posture. Mr Lambie drove him into Opunake in his motor car to Dr Barron, who found he had *•« bones broken, but that he was badly shaken and had his back sprained.
