THE POLICE FORCE.
"IF DISSATISFIED, CAN RESIGN." [Per Press Association. 1 Wellington, May 30. The Hon. Mr Herdman (Minister of Justice), in a statement in regard to the recent demands by the police, declared that he was unable to see his way to increase the pay, but £5 per year will be allowed for making np uniforms and ijor footwear. New Zealand policemen will then be better off than any in the Australian States, and probably better off than any in v the British Empire. Sunday-leave and time-off for attendance at Court must
be granted at the discretion of offi-
cers in charge of the district; as, previously, breaches of discipline must
be dealt with by responsible officers
of the Department, but provision in \ the forthcoming Police Bill will allow decisions to be reviewed under certain conditions. The railway authorities could not see their way to grant free railway passes. Mr Herdman continued, and he was unable to grant the request for extended annual leave. He concluded: "If any are dissatisfied, I will be prepared to accept their resignations. It is impossible to allow any police association to be formed, but the men's representatives will always receive consideration."
