POLITICAL REFORM LEAGUE

- “Light and Liberty,” the first issiu , I of which reaches us to-day, is to In , | a monthly journal in pamphlet form ; 1 issued under the auspices of the Poli i ! tical Reform Leagues. It aims a' I —in the words of its editorial intro ■ 1 duction—“disseminating reliable infer i matiou upon the leading political am I social questions of the day, and wil | defend and vindicate those principle: ! which all thoughtful men and women are agreed are imlispensible to tin ( well-being of the people.” The oh '| ject is certainly excellent, and w< wish the enterprise success.. But thei even “light” and “liberty” look sr very different from different Party standpoints that the task will not b< so easy after all. “Light and Lib erty” claims to stand essentially for good government and states furtke: “that it is not so much concerned with defence of vested interests, a: with the maintenance of the rights and liberties of the people. There never was a time in the history o 4 civilised nations, and of this country wlm both were tnreatened in a more insiduous and deadly fashion. And apparently, there never was a time when a greater number of men were seemingly prepared, for the sake of popularity and fame, to sacrifice the liberties of the people generally. Tin public badly needs educating upon this point. Good government can only come from, and be maintained upon an educated public opinion. ‘Light and Liberty’ hopes to play its part in that direction ,and to act as the resolut( and uncompromising champion of tin people’s liberties!-' And for the res' —well, its programme is simplicity itself. It stands by and for the plat form and programme of the Reform League.”
