A FRAUDULENT BUTCHER.
At the Isle of Wight County Court, Ryde, last month, Sidney' P. lassley, butcher, Shanklin, was summoned for a breach of the Merchandise Marks Act, and for selling River Plate mutton as New Zealand mutton. Mr H. C. Cameron, Produce Commissioner for the Dominion, stated that on March 11 he .entered the defendant’s shop and asked the manager if he sold New Zealand mutton. IJe said he did, whereupon witness asked for a loin, which was cut from a carcase said to be from New Zealand, and the invoice was marked accordingly. A week or so later witness saw' the defendant, who then admitted that the meat supplied was from the River Plate. Defendant’s manager admitted that although rhe carcase was labelled “new season’s mutton,” he had said it was New Zealand. The Chairman said that the mag. trates considered the case a serious one, and fined the defendant £3 and 26s costs.
