COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING.' The Council met yesterday. Members present were: Messrs W. Hathaway (chairman), W. Rogers, J. Young, E. Walter, W. H. Were, J. Smith, T. A. Anderson, and J. Christoff el. ENGINEER’S REPORT. Mr E. C. Robinson submitted his report a« follows;— !■ The completing of, the Mangaehu metalling contract by. the Council has been proceeding steadily, but the weather having broken, it will be a difficult matter to get on the remainder of the metal. Nineteen chains remain to be done, and about half of the metal required for this is ready in the pit for carting out.,* Tlje breaking of the stone on the road down to gauge has been proceeding satisfactorily, and nearly all that has been put out has been completed. The maintenance shell rock contract for the Mangaehu riding is proceeding in a satisfactory manner. The heaps were well stacked ami have all been measured up. The Cardiff road cul-

vert and filling to replace the email bridge has been completed. The Douglas Valley drainage cleaning contract requires further work to complete. The crushing plant 1 is again in the North Riding. The Denbigh and York Road re-metalling has been completed, and Radnor and ” Pembroke roads will now be taken' in hand. Owing to the lateness of the season 1 have stopped the grader Tor a time, as it cannot work to advantage just now. The timber for the surfaceman’s cottage, Manaia road, has been ordered, and the work will be put in hand; as soon as it arrives. >

• . fj' ) FOREMAN'S REPORT. North Mountain Road.—-This hai been repaired at the south end, and at Monmouth Road junction. Denbigh Road.—About half a mile ■has been re-metalled, and the roller is now at work on it. Four hundred cubic yards were crushed j some of which has been delivered for mainteayuce purposes at the lower end. - York Road.—The ro-raotalling is finished on this road. Over 100 cubic yards per day Were 'put through the crusher. Riding East.—During the month the following roads have been patched and repaired: , Stanley, Cross, Croydon, Beaconsfield, Keiit Terrace, Cross West and Salisbury. The work of the Moa Road Board has now been completed on Ratapiko Road at a total cost of £5 6d. A few dangerous places on Croydon Road South are being fenced. 11 South Riding.—The month has been '■pent in water tabling and metal banking on the various roads, which 'are l all. in fair order. 1 The work 1 recently done bn the Maruarau Road is satisfactory. Six culvert pipes were put in' on this road.

East Riding (Toko).-—Tire Toko |load has boon patched and a double pipe culvert put in. Wawiwiti Road has also been patched, and new metal raked in: Both Toko and Slaricfish Roads ai'e almost without maintenance metal and will probably break up badly during the winter. Owing to the weather breaking, the work, on . Sangster’s Hill has been temporarily stopped. The number of pipes used recently were: On Toko Road East, 7 9in; Mangaehu, 12 9iu ; Toko, 20 12in; Makuri Road, 18, Din; Ahuroa West, 12 9in.

East Riding (Douglas).-Taibora 'Road has been ploughed and reformed for 38 chains. Makuri Ro.'d has'had drains cleaned and most of the water tabling done. Seven 12m. have üben u ben put in on the road, and eleven 12in. pipes on the Mangaehu Road. Patching and repairs have been curried‘out on the main road.

East Riding (Huiroa). —During the month general road work and repairs have been carried out on the various roads under ray control, which are 1 in fine order for this time of the year! West Riding.—Hastings Road: This has broken up badly and extensive re-metalling will be required on it next season. Brecon Road has been re-metalled all but six chains. The new filling requires fencing. Ronald Road has been blinded and rolled. The County section on Manaia Rohd has been fenced, and an entrance made. The new cart is to hafid and is satisfactory. ‘

Mangaehu Riding. During the month I have been most of the time in completion of Mr McPhee’s contract.

The Puniwhakau surfaceman has been working on Punewhnkau and Taurakawa Roads. Surfacing work will be carried out forthwith on Tututr.wa and Mangaehu Roads. It was decided on the motion of Ci Walter to put in a culvert to connect on Makuri-Huiakaraa Road as soon as Mr Gray completes the drain from the road to the river.

On the motion of the chairman it wap decided that members inspect the available sites at Huiroa suitable for a surfaceman’s cottage and report at next meeting. CORRESPONDENCE. A petition signed by A. Robertson, R. J. Nairn, John G. Robertson, and T). A. Robertson (settlers on the Cornwall and Stewart Roads) requested rhe Council’s consideration in regard to the necessity of a swing bridge over the \Vaiongoro River at the Cornwall Dead crossing. The petitioners pointed out that a number of children have to cross daily, whilst other traffic, including milk carts, is considerable.—The Council replied stating they had no funds at their disposal for the carrying out of the work. A letter from Mr J. B. Hine, M.P., read as follows: —I have to acknovv-

ledge receipts of resolution of your Council relative to a subsidy required for Taihore R6ad £ ijar £, and in reply can only say the matter will have my immediate attention, although very probably it Avill nqt! take practical form until the public estimates

are brought down in Parliament. — Received.

A letter was received from Public Works Department enclosing an Or-der-in-Council, declaring, a portion of the Manga Roadrtb be a 1 county road. —The Council forwarded I '.a reply, stating that a sum o! £B(X)i, had been spent on the road, the ‘"Council being unaware that it was a’.county road. Slips had occurred on the road, and an expense of about £2D would be incurred in removing them. They thought that the) (government should bear the cost, andXforwarded a letter to that effect. ! i 1 Another letter 1 from 1 the Public Works Department ashed that requests for grants for new road and bridge works be i forwarded as soon as possible.—The flatter • was left in the hands of the (engineer, with instructions to collect a list of such works needed.

A letter was received from the Public Works Department,) stating that there was. an available balance of £450 on the vote on the curijent year’s ap propriations, in the fopm of :a £ for £ subsidy for road between Mangaehr. and Punewhakau, and a sum of £3OO for Makuri—The Clerk, /was instructed to apply for the grjmts. • A letter was recejved/rfrom the secretary of the Stratford J Chamber ■of Commerce re work;pn Pembroke Road West, advising the Council that the Stratford Borough! Council and ' the Chamber are willing tolcontributo £4 each, and requested that the County Council contributes like ampunt and carry out the work, at.hi cost of £12,Agreed to.

The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote, stating t|io amount due as the Council’s dMare» of the contributions towards the fund, in accordance with section 41 off “The Hospital and Charitable,! Institutions Act, 1909,” being at the rkte of one halfpenny and nineponce half-penny respectively in the £IOO of capital value;—

An application from Mr* 1 H. Wunsch, of the Central Store, Midhirst to the Council, asking them to contribute towards the cost of removing an obstruction from the front of his store, wasi v ,received, and a reply sent to the effect that if Mr Wunsch contributed £4,. the Council would be willing to make, the sum up to £6. The Department of Lands and Survey notifiedf that the “thirds” for the year ending March 3lst were now due. The Council’s portion was £62 7s 2d, and tkejvi were requested to submit proposals; regarding the work to be done with> the amount available.

Anderson, on behalf of the Mangatoki.Hairy Co., asked the Council’s permission to cart material for about a mile and a half along the Palmer and -Duthio Roads, the Company undertaking to repair according to the engineer’s assessment, any damage done to the roads.—On the motion of 1 Cr. Walter, seconded by Cr.. Smith, the required permission was granted. | ACCOUNTS. I Account to the amount of £2740 were passed for payment.
