THE BOILER LAW.
FLA XMILLERS’ FIXED. [Per Press Association.] Invercargill, May ‘2l. Jarvis and Fosbend'er, flaxfnillers, New River, were charged that: being the owners of a steam boiler that they neglected to exhibit in a conspicuous place a certificate supplied by the inspector of machinery in respect to the said boiler. Mr A. M. MacDonald represented the defendants, who pleaded guilty. Sergeant Simpson said that cases of tills nature gave the Department and the police a great deal of trouble. Mr MacDonald submitted that the omission was an oversight. Jarvis generally attended to such matters, and at this period he was away in the North Island, and did not know that the certificate was granted, which was left at the post office, while the owner was notified to that effect. In this case the notice had been sent in January, but the defendants had failed to lift the certificate. In view of the extensive trouble the police were required to go to he would ask for a substantial penalty. A fine of £2 was inflicted, the Magistrate remarking that those who own boilers must know the boiler law.
