A CHILI) POISONED. [IV Puess Association. 1 Hamilton, May 20. The three year old child of a settle! residing at Walton, dost its life in a peculiar manner. Its mother and another woman were making soap, when a small quantity of caustic soda and water was left in a dipper. The little one picked up the vessel while playing and drank a quantity of the contents with fatal effect. SUFFOCATED BY GAS. 1 kV. Christchurch, May 20. One of the members of the special party which accompanied the Dun edin school children on their visit to Christchurch, ,T. Murdoch, a member of the Mosgiel school committee, had a serious mishap to-day. He war staying at Coker’s Hotel, and did not get up this'morning. On entering his room at noon, one pf the hotel attendants found the apartments full of gas, and the gas jet in the room was turned on. Murdoch, who was unconscious, was at once conveyed to the Christchurch Hospital, where hh condition was pronounced to he critical. It is thought that when turning off the gas on retiring last night Mur doch unwittingly turned it on again after the light was extinguished.

THE BOULOOTT STREET TRAGEDY. Wellington, May 2p. At the inquest on 'Alexander Thomson, who shot himself in Boulcott street on Saturday, a verdict was returned that death was due to a gunshot wound self-inflicted. DEATH FROM BLOOD POISONING Greymouth, May 20. An inquest was held to-day touching the death of Bertha Elizabeth Bird, a married woman, who died at Ngahere last week.' A verdict wav returned that deceased met her death through blood poisoning, as the result of improper interference.
