CIVIL SERVANTS. Wellington, May 19. At a public meeting in Petone, an address was given by Mr T,. Townsend on electoral reform, and the restrictions imposed on civil servants. The meeting carried a resolution of protest against tho restrictions now placed on railway and civil servants in local and political, matters, and demands that the Government should introduce legislation to give all the Government employees full civil and political rights.

WELLINGTON GOES SLOW. Wellington, May 20. The Mayor (Mr J. P. Luke) interviewed on the winter outlook, said that tho unemployed question was becoming more acute as the winter advanced. Wellington, probably, would be able to accommodate their own surplus, but he sounded a note of warnin'; to outsiders. Wellington would have to live on-her income this year. No loans would be raised for works, so it would be useless coming here. Only small works were to be carried out, and they were scarcely adequate to absorb a‘ll that would be offering.

THE CASE OF YOUNG SHEA HAN. ! Auckland, May 20. The boy Sheahan, who fatally shot George Fyfe at Parahaka has been sent to St. Mary’s Industrial School. Justice Edwards said this was the best course in the prisoner’s interest, the case not being one, calling for imprisonment. The Judge, addressing the prisoner, said the crime was one of the gravest possible to commit, but he did not think prisoner was a vicious lad, and with careful discipline should become a respectable member of the community. Sheahan, who is now 15 years of age, will be kept in the home till he is 21.
