THE LICENSING LAW. I [Per Press Association.] Wanganui, May 17. Magistrate Kerr gave his decision this morning in the case of the barmaid at Foster’s hotel who was charged with supplying liquor to an intoxicated person. The Magistrate convicted her and fined her £5 and costs £7, solicitors fee £3 3s. The charge against the landlord of permitting drunkenness was adjourned till Monday. HASTINGS; MAYOR. Hastings, May 17. At a special meeting of the Borough Council Councillor W. Hart was elected Mayor to succeed the late Mr Jas. Garnett. AUCKLAND DIVORCE. Auckland, May 17. At the Supreme Court, a decree nisi was granted in the case of Mary Ann Burrows v. Pierre Fimch Burrows (New Plymouth) for de»rtion. CRUELTY TO ANIMALS. Wellington, May 16.
At the Magistrate’s Court George Bradley was fined £5 and costs, and expenses totalling £2 12s, for heating a horse in an unnecessary and cruel manner. Evidence showed that the vehicle had one wheel in the gutter, and defendant was using the whip in a very severe manner. Then he took the hutfc end of the whip handle, and presently, the horse moved on. Then the driver, according to one witness, “deliberately stopped the horse, tore a piece of shafting from its position, and heat the animal with the bludgeon .in a most cruel manner. Hie blows were so heavy that the horse fairly groaned.”
John was lined £3 and £2 His costs for working a horse while it was in such a state, being aged, lame and suffering from an incurable disease on both forelegs, so that its destruction had boon ordered.
