At tlie Waihi Grand Junction meeting Mr ilothwell, who presided, justified the non-payment of a dividend, and said that if nothing interrupts the working, probably an interim dividend of a shilling will be paid in November, and a final distribution of a shilling later. But the possible shortage of labour, would prevent a minimum output of 350 tons, which was necessary. Mr Ilothwell suggested that the Government of New Zealand should encourage the immigration of miners by assisted passages. ...Brisbane, May 17. There was a tragedy at Childers. A man named Carey shot at and critically wounded- a woman named Carter and then suicided by taking poison. Jealousy is supposed to be the cause. The stock returns at the end of last year showed 665,599 horses, an increase of 165615; cattle 5,209,614, an increase of 136,493; sheep 20,243,580, a decrease of 492,401. Melbourne, May 17.
