DOMINION NEWS.

SENSATIONAL RUNAWAY. [Per Press Association.] Auckland, May 17. A sensational runaway occurred this morning at Eden Terrace. Iwo horses in a four-wheeled waggon bolted, and the driver, who was running behind and hanging on to the reins, could not control the animals. An employee of the Eden Terrace Road Board, named Smith, attempted to seize the animals by the head, but his arm got jammed between the trace and one of the horses, and he was dragged for fifty yards. He was able to keep his feet, but was kicked by a horse when lie became disentangled andf ell under the front wheels, which passed over him, and ho was dragged some distance in front of the back wheels, which were locked. The unfortunate man, who is married with two children, was found to ha\ r o sustained four broken ribs, besides terrible internal injuries. His condition is regarded as critical. The horses were stopped by the driver without further harm being done.

PRISONER RE-CAPTURED

Wellington, May 18

Early on Monday morning, John Fairly, alias Wilson, one of the prisoners who escaped from Palmerston North gaol a fortnight ago, was recaptured in a lodging house in Courtenay Place. Since escaping, Fairly stayed four days at Palmerston, and finally left on foot and walked across country, sleeping in haystacks. On Saturday ho took the Train at Tokomaru to 'Wellington. He was well dressed when captured. ACCIDENT TO OLD MAN. Auckland, May 15. Charles Edward Bush, 86 years, was knocked down by a cab in Newmarket cn Saturday night, and was removed to the hospital, where his condition is critical.
