STRATFORD BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of tne Stratford Borough Council was held last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. P. Kirkwood), Councillors R. Dingle, J. Masters, J. B'. Richards, J. Boon, R. McK. MoriSon, F. Arden, and J. H. Thompson. An apology for absence was received from Councillor Fredric. Correspondence. The secretary o. the Stratford Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote with reference to the Council’s contribution to the Board’s funds, the Council’s liability being monthly instalments of £l6 4 s 9d. The letter was received, the amount being the usual one. Mr H. W. Climie wrote, stating that, the district engineer had written him to the effect that he was unable to do anything in the matter of compelling a lessee of the railway reserve adjoining his leasehold to remove fruit cases complained of. He threw out a suggestion that the borough bylaws might cover the question.—The Mayor stated that the matter had been settled.
Mr A. E, Chard asked that better access should be given to his property in Portia Street, southward of Romeo Street. He offered to give assistance to the Council with horse and dray.—The matter was referred to the Works Committee for a report. Messrs Mackay and Gredig wrote, asking the Council to improve the road in cutting facing section 91. —-It was stated that the work was on the boundary between the borough and the county and the question Had been dealt with by the Council on other occasions. It was pointed out by Cr. Arden that to do any work on it at this time of the year would result in the road becoming a quagmire, and he was in favour of holding over tbe work until the spring. After discussion, it was. resolved to refer the matter to the Works Committee.
Mr A. F. Burrell,, contractor for the Public Works Building, applied for permission to take shingle out of the Patea river.—The Mayor stated that there was a little shingle in the river, but not much. They wished to help the contractor in every way, hut there was not much in it for the Council at Is a yard royalty.—lt was decided to grant the request, the contractor to pay 2s per yard, to cover all damage done to roads, etc. ~ .

The crushing plant has been removed from the Pembroke Road site, anc. set up at the fold crushing site where 692 cubic yards of boulders and 141 yards of shingle have been crushed al a cost of 2s per yard. There is an other ,300 yards of boulders, and about-‘IOO- yards ’of shingle to be, cniskigd at ! this site before the plant can bo remoyd to the septic tanl paddock to crush 300 yards there a; specified.. , Metal patching has been done cn the following strata; —Opunake Road Miranda Street, Pago Street, Hamk" Street, Swansea Road, and Pembroke Road.
A 10-foot culvert 12-in. x 9-in haf been inserted in Regan Street East at its junction with Sylvia Street, and the approach thereto metalled.
Watortables and culverts have beei cleaned out; on the Opunake Road be tween Hamlet Street and Mr Dingle’ i residence, and in Regan Street Eas from Cordelia Street to the Borougi boundary. COMMITTEES. The following committees were se up:—Works Committee, Councillor: Dingle, Masters, Thompson and King ; Library Committee, Crs. Thompson Richards and Arden; Fire Brigad Committee, Crs. King, Fredric, anc Thompson; Lighting Committee, Crs Richards, Dingle, Fredric and Thomp son; Reserves Committee, Crs. Boon Masters, Morison, and Richards; Towi Hall Committee, Crs. King, Boon, anc Arden; Abattoir Committee, Crs Fredric and Dingle; Band Committee Crs. Morison and Boon. GENERAL, The contractor for the new Public Works Building (Mr A. F. Burrell) was given permission under the usual conditions to cart earth across the pavement, and to leave gravel in heaps on tho side of the road. It was decided to.grant Mr F. Copestake, of the abattoirs, an extension telephone to his house. Matter concerning drainage was discussed in committee, and it wa l decided that the Mayor, Crs. Richards and King interview Mr R. D. Lowers with reference to his drain. The receipts for the month were £215 14s 9d, and the expenditure £725 11s lOd. The Council then adjourned tiV Monday next, when the estimates wii ! bo brought down.
