FIRES.
FIRE AT TAIHAPE. Taihape, May 10. A fire occurred at 2.15 this morning .n a block of shops opposite the railway station, owned by Mrs Elliott Wilson and occupied by Dolan (restaurant) and Miss Doreen (fruiterer and confectioner), and Rico (restaurant). The damage to the buildings is about G4OO. Insurances £3OO in the State. Dolan’s stock and effects were uninsnmod and the loss is small. Doreen’s Insurance £SO in the Norwich and £6O in the Commercial Union, exclusive of another £SO taken out the previous day (total loss).. Rice’s effects were insured for £9O in the Commercial Union. The origin was apparently a defective chimney.
MATCH FACTORY DESTROYED Dunedin, May 11.
The New Zealand Wax Vesta Corapany’s factory at Gaversham was totally destroyed by fire this morning. The outbreak was discovered at 4.10, but the fire had then a strong hold, and though both the city and the Cavu'sham brigades attended, nothing was saved. The insurances amounted, it is understood, to £2500 in the Victoria and Royal Exchange offices, but their loss is estimated at £llOO more. There was about £BO worth of notches on the premises. Work wps stopped at noon on Saturday, and nobody had been in the building since. The o.igin of the fire is a complete mystery. ‘
