FATAL ACCIDENT.

COACH driver killed. PASSENGERS PITCHED (XT. [Pek Press Association.] Palmerston North, May 12. A terrible experience Retell the Rongotea coach, which Jett Palmerston on Saturday afternoon. When about a mile from liongotea the horses bolted, killed the driver (Archibald Eliott) instantly, overturned the coach, and precipitated the hvo passengers, Revolt and Classen. About five o’clock when darkness was becoming pronounced, the driver had dismounted to light -up at the pass, and ho must have slipped when remounting, or the horses must have started too soon, as Eliott fell near the horses, one of •which lashed out, mushing his skull. They sped furiously on for about 200 yards and overturned the coach in an open drain and hurled the passengers out. They proceeded to plunge, with the result that two of the horses received mortal injuries. The passengers are not badly hurt, but the coach was smashed.

Deceased was a single man, 34 years of age, and belonged to Timaru, and was part proprietor of the coaches.
