TOKO NOTES
[from our own correspondent.] CARD CLUB. A meeting •nan hold in tho Coronation Hall recently, when it was decided to form a card club. Mr CL B. Bocock was appointed chairman, Mr W. Pratt, secretary, and Mr C. Riley captain. Toko and Toko Road played a game of euchre on the 29th of April in the Coronation Hall. A mixed team of twenty-two a-side sat down at the tables. Tho match was won by Toko Road, the results ""being, Toko Road 48, Toko 44. Supper was prepared by . the local team. Tho membership is -at present about forty, including several ladies. Toko should be able to pick a team that will take a lot of beating. HALL COMMITTEE. The Hall Committee held their first fortnightly-assembly, about two weeks ago, which was well patronised in spite of the wet weather, some 25 couples taking the floor. The music was kindly supplied by Mrs Tuck, Misses Cumberworth, Fields, and Corbert. Light refreshments were handed round by the Hall Committee. EUCHRE PARTY AND DANCE. The Hall Committee held a euchre party and dance in aid of the crockery
fund on Tuesday last, and considering the wet night a good number turned up. Some eight players took part at euchre. The ladies’ prize, a box of handkerchiefs, was won by Mrs J. Lister (Toko), with ten games. The gentleman’s prize, a silver sovereign case, was won by Mr J. Burgham (Toko) with eleven games. Mr W. H. Were presented tho prizes to the winners. . The Hail was then cleared, and dancing commenced, thirty-five taking the floor which was in good order. Tho music was supplied by Miss Clark, Miss Cumberworth, Miss Corbert, and Mrs Lister. Tho duties of M.O. was carried out by Mr M. Gernhoefer in a satisfactory mariner. A tasty supper was provided by the ladies. Tho ladies who assisted in the supper room was as follows: Mesdames Were, Kilpatrick, Riley,
Judd, Morrison, Shields, and Miss Wore.
MOTOR MISHAP. On Wednesday, Mr Scldon, representing Messrs R. Cock and Co., New Plymouth, was motoring on his way to Toko, and as he was descending Sangsters’ hill on the East Road, by some means the wheels of the car , t , . - f - v skidded, with the result that the car shot! off the road into a gully and fence, a drop of pome twelve or fifteen feet. ■ The car fortunately landed on its wheels with M r Seldon in ■, j • n i] j i it. Had the motor car overtunrend it would no doubt have been a serious disaster. Mr Seldon lost no time in procuring assistance, and with the aid of two good horses and four or five willing hands, the car was soon got on to the road, again very little the worse for. its ‘mishap., i
'li GUN CLUB. The Toko Gun Club aro to have another match on the 15th inst. As the shooting season is in, and several of the members have had a good deal of practice, there should bo some good records. Shooters aro requested to take their own ammunition
TOKO ODDFELLOWS. ■ - ■- , * } ■ rr ■ ■ ' The Oddfellows are going to hold a euchre tournament and dance, in aid of the regalia fund, on the 30th inst. Four trophies, to be given in prizes for euchre, are on view at Mr Bain’s store, and attract the eye of the admirers, being both costly and useful; in fact, they are the best euchre prizes ever shown in Toko. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The Committee are improving the play-ground by talcing out the remainder of stumps which have' ben an eyesore to both teachers and committee for years. The stumps are all matai, and are split into firewood, which is much needed in this kind of weather. PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs W. Pratt are leaving on Saturday for a short visit to Christchurch. Mr M. Chainey is also leaving the same day, to spend a holiday in the Cathedral city. Mr Otto Meuli is shortly procuring an up-to-date motor car, which he intends for hire.
