SHIPPING INTERESTS.
IS THERE A COMBINE [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] [United Press Association.] (Received H.O aim.),( Sydney, May 9. The Herald says; The arrival ori Monday of the Rimutaka lends color to the belief in shipping circles that an understanding has been reached by a number of lines trading between England, America', Australia and New Zealand. This impression Jias arisen owing to the rdceiit purchase's of steamers, and a series of depa.vi-es from tho ordinary services of “i n lines. For instance, many New Zealand shipping companies’ steamers load at Liverpool instead of Oio iCd-eral-Houlder’s vessels, which f<nmeily maintained a West of England trade. It was reported some imo ago that a portion of the FeaeralHonlder’s interests had been purchased by the New Zealand Shipping Company; also that tho Union Company had secured a share, but a definite announcement was not obtainable. Su re then an important merging of shipping interests appears to have ocolined, which caused a suggestion as to the pooling of interests, It is difficult to determine whether the Shaw, Savill Company is (included, but, if not, it is a strange coincidence that their steamers now load regularly at Montreal and St. Johns, together with the vessels of the New Zealand Shipping Company, which built up the trade in tho first year.”
