THE GREAT ADVENTURE.
(To tho Southern Party under Cap-
tain Scott.) Is it so hard?—so hard to live and die When such a tale as this rings in
our cars, With the clear valor of a battle cry. With splendor that is deeper than our tears.
Surely tho world grows younger—wakes again With gladder courage and with nobler eyes, Kindled by such a triumph over pain, But such defeat, that won so great a prize.
And England—we who are so proud to-day, Proud of our Xante and Honor held so high , With more than bitter tears shall we
repay That trust in us which helped our brave to die!
All wo can offer may not change tho debt Unpayalb eto the heroic dead; Still will their spirit make ns greater yet, Shining for ever where our sons shall tread.
Still to our blood the great adventure calls, Still shall wo answer, generous of tlio price, Each passing on this banner as he falls: ‘ “Courage, and brother-love, and sacrifice.” j | Tragic and pitiless, with icy breath The blizzard swept across the frozen seas, And with it came the end—the end? 0 death Where is thy victory over hearts like these ? —M. Adams.
