PROTECTING THE LUGGAGE.
These are great days for passing on every possible risk and a time when insurance plays a large part in people’s affairs. It is not. therefore, surprising to find that the system of insuring one’s luggage against loss or theft while one is travelling is rapidly gaining acceptance in the old country. Just before Christmas the Lancashire and Yorkshire Kail way Company entered into an arrangement with a baggage insurance association under which tickets may be purchased at any booking office, as in the case of passengers’ insurance, against the risks of accident. In February it was announced that the London and North-Western Company have followed suit, and no doubt before long all the principal railway and steamboat companies will adopt the idea. The cost of the premium tickets ranges from Is to 10s, and the amounts insured for vary in proportion from £2O to £IOO, for 15, 30, or 60 days. The insurance covers loss either on sea or. land, and extends to temporary residence in hotels. We may expet very shortly to see something of the same kind adopted in New Zealand.
