WHITECHAPEL BY-ELECTION. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] [United Press Association.] London, April 30. The Whitechapel by-election resulted : —Samuel 1722, Browne 1556. PRAISE FOR THE CHANCELLOR. London, April 30. The House of Commons adopted the tea duty, income tax, and super tax resolutions.
The Hon. Mr Mactcrman (Financial Secretary to the Treasury), paid a tribute to Mr Lloyd George in triumphantly financing the world's greatest scheme for social amelioration.
Mr Lloyd George, in a brief speech, lamented the increase in armaments, which, if each country blamed the other, would continue to grow until civilisation would Ire strangled. He added in reply to Mr Chamberlain that the Budget of 1909 taxed not the necessaries, but the surplus wealth and the country’s prosperity instead of being retarded would be augmented. i
