THE POLICE FORCE

Commissioner Cullen arrived in Dunedin this afternoon and subsequent!) had a conference with the members of the police force. The meeting was attended by 47 men and various matters wore discussed. Commissioner Cullen says that no serious grievances were voiced here, and that the men, as a whole, seemed contented. Minoi representations made to him will be placed before the Minister in conjunction with the representations from other centres.
AUCKLAND EXHIBITION
Christchurch, May 1
Mr M. J. Scott, of Adelaide, who will be remembered in connection with the International Exhibition held in Christchurch, and with the 1889 Exhibition held in* Dunedin, writing to Mr E. Motley Meadows, manager ol the Auckland Exhibition, states that lie is moving in the direction of having the Governments of Mew South Wales, Victoria and South Australia represented at the Auckland Exhibition by an exhibit of Australian wine* and dried fruits. The South Australian Government is agreeable to the proposal, but being anxious that the exhibit shou'd be a united one, Mi Scott is awaiting information from the Government’s of New South Wale* and Victoria before doing anything definite. MINISTERIAL MOVES ENTS. Westport, May 1. Mr Fraser, Minister of Mines, was entertained at luncheon by the citizen* to-day. He visited Seddonville in the afternoon, where lie received various deputations, one in regard to boring near the old Cardiff Company’s property with a view to lengthening the life of the Seddonville State mine. The Minister promised to have this done immediately. This evening he received a large number of deputations on local matters. His reply to the Chamber of Commerce, which asked that the construction of the West-port-Tnangahua railway should he expedited, was not encouraging, the Minister holding out little hope of a sum being placed on the Estimates this year, except to cover contracts already in hand. Mr Fraser will leave in the morning for Nelson, en route t;> Wellington.
SOLAR OBSERVATION
Wellington, May 1
At flip conclusion of a lecture by Hiss Mary Proctor (daughter of the eminent astronomer) this evening, the Hen. R. H. Rhodes announced that Mis- Proctor had received a communication from Mr Thomas Cawthron. of Nelson, offering to build, equip and ondo'v a solar physic observatory ii! the vicinitv of Nelson, at a cost of from £IO,OOO to £12,000. At present there is no such observatory between India and America. Astronomers have long desired to have <such an observatory in this part of the world, in order to complete the chain of solar observations,
