THE SLAVS.
A distinguished Russian lady not long ago declared that “the Germans have reached their day, the English their mid-day, the French their afternoon, the Italians their evening, the Spanish their night; hut the Slavs stand on the threshold of the morning.” With the mighty wave of unrest in Europe it is interesting to recall these words, for without doubt the Slav is knocking at the gate. It is stated that.the term ‘Slav,” used in its wide sense, may he applied to some 1.40,000,000 millions of the inhabitants of Europe. and includes Russian Boles, The Poles of Prussia, the Czechs, Moravians, Slovaks, and Illyrians in the Austrian Empire, and the Bulgarians, Servians, and Montenegrins in the Balkans. Scattered through, many lands, and generally subservient to a ruling race, their own powerful racial bond is making itself known and felt the more oppression seeks to crush national and united feeling.
