THE CELLS AND THE PARROT.
BATTLESHIP EPISODE. “There, miss, are the cells where they keep the prisoners,” said the patient gunner who was doing the rounds* of H.M.S. Neiv Zealand in Wellington with two young ladies. “Oh!” exclaimed one of the young ladies. “I-should like to see one—do let me look.’ ’ The patient gunner slid back the flap of the peep-hole. The young lady peeped in, .and saw—a white; cockatoo, peacefully cracking nuts in his cage! “Prisoners are not on show, miss,” explained the patient gunner. “Why is the parrot in that cell, then?” demanded the fair inquisitor. “For swearin,’ miss,” replied the patient gunner, with the gravity of an undertaker. “Really!” exclaimed the young lady, .with a shocked expression. “Haw! Haw! Haw!”—her male companion exploded, and then, recognising the gravity of his indiscretion, blew his nose vigorously. The patient gunner maintained his gravity, while the young lady, sweeping the group with a glance of scorn, marched off, the party humbly following in her train.
