"FATHER IN HEAVEN.”
THE CHINESE REPUBLIC.
MARBLE ALTAR AT PEKING. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] 1 United Press Association.] (Received 8.-15 a.m.) London, April 27. Bishop Montgomery, interviewed, referred to the Marble Altar of Heaven at Pekin which was used for centuries on one day of the year by the Emperor, who stood on the steps and prayed for the people. The tablet behind the altar was inscribed “Father of Heaven,” and represented the Mongolians’ primitive faith in one God, which faith was older than Confucius. China, said the Bishop, would be unprecedentedly thrilled if the Government and Minister® today prayed to the Father of Heaven in the immemorial manner. Prayers were offered in churches of all denominations in Britain today, including the Roman Catholic.
THE CHINESE PEOPLE GRATEFUL.
President Yuan Shih Kai telegraphed to the London Missionary Society thanking them for their kindly act, adding: “I pray for the prosperity of your religion. All the Chinese people are grateful.” THE RESPONSE FOR PRAYER. Pekin, April 26. Britain’s and America’s response to China’s appeal for intercession has created a deep impression. The newspapers state that the movement forges a new link, binding the East to the West.
