The Stratford Evening Post. WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. FRIDAY, APRIL 25, 1913. THE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

We have to congratulate Mr W. P. Kirkwood on his re-election unopposed for another term as Mayor of Stratford. During ids term of office, Mr Kirkwood has devoted much time and attention to borough affairs, and has also taken a keen and honest interest in all matters affecting the Borough’s welfare. Although we may not have seen eye to eye with him in all things, we freely admit his good service. He was first elected to the Stratford Borough Council in 1906, when he contested a seat rendered vacant hy the resignation of Cr. P. F. Knife, being opposed hy an ex-Mayor in Mr Jonas Masters. Mr Kirkwood was also returned to the Council at the municipal elections in 1907. Tn 1908 he contested the Mayoralty with Mr Ceo. Sangster, and after a very close contest was defeated hy a narrow majority. In the following year he again stood and was defeated by Mr J, Masters. Tn 1912, Mr Kirkwood contested the election with Mr -I. McAllister, and was elected by a substantial majority. From 1909, when Mr Kirkwood left the Council, until 1912, when ho was returned as Mayor, he was hy no means idle, and. it will be remembered by many of our readers that ho shouldered some of the heaviest work of the Stratford A, and P. Association, while during his year

as President of the Association, several notable schemes were brought forward, including the Model Dairy Farm scheme', the Dairy Farm Competition, and other progressive movements which have done much towards helping the Stratford A. and P. Association to gain the high place i! now holds amongst similar institutions in the Dominion. We understand that ho proposes to follow the lines taken by him during the past year, although, of course, loan proposals will be, for the time being, shelved. For the Borough Council there are eleven candidates in the field for the nine seats. Consequently, an election will take place. We hope to see a good team elected to work with Mr Kirkwood during the coming year.
