SHEEP DOG TRIALS.
TARATA CLUB’S MEETING. The Tarata Sheep Dog Trial Club held its annual, meeting on Thursday and Friday last, and fresh records were made. Five year's ago the Club commenced with thirty-two entries, and steady progress has now increased this number to 117. Ibe officials, who were kept very busy, worked well, and much of the general success can be attributed to their efforts Among those present on the' first day was Mr J. B. Mine, M.P. In. this event, the competitor had to stand at a flag and start his dog, head sheep, haul to flag, drive through and leave dog in charge, open gate at pen and yard the sheep. Time allowed, 10 minutes.
Huntaway Competition, between 3 sots of flags, on a zig-zag course, about 359 yards. Maximum points, bunt away 8, command TO, stylo 6, noise 6; total, 30. J. Blair’s Clusky, 8966 ((29) ... 1 J. Armstrong’s Spot, 7966 (28) ... 2 J. Hunter’s Tar, 6966 (27) ... 3 S. George’s Darkle, 5946 (24) ... 4
R. McMullian’s Lassie 23, P. Rolfe’s Don 23, F. Lambert’s Boss 22, J. Hunter’s Dime 21, P. Tocker’s Joe 19, P. Tocker’s Scot' 17, J. A. Robertson’s Rum. 15, H. C- Batcheldpr's Squire 15, and six others also started. Tbs competitor had to take charge of the sheep, and the dog must hunt away to the satisfaction of the judge, and must bark before going through second set of flaflgs, otherwise will not qualify. Time allowed, 12 minutes.
Mr F. M. Standish’s Scott secured the special prizes awarded by Dr. Gault and M. King for dog scoring most points in classes 1,2, and 4; Borthwick and Son’s special for local dog under best command and Patterson Bros.’ enp for dog competing in local event within prescribed limits.
J. Hunter’s Wobbler annexed Mr J. B. Hine, M.P.’s Challenge Cup for most points in class 1.
F. Lett’s Lassie secured Mr Greiner’s modal for dog scoring most points without winning a prize. Mr J. Hunter’s special to local dogs scoring most points in Huntaway went to Mr J. Armstrong’s Spot. T. Hannah’s Maori obtained Mr F. M. Standish’s special for dog scoring most points in class 2 that has come a distance of over 20 miles and has never won a prize. Mr F. Virgin’s special for boy under 18 showing best style of working dogs was won by A. Corrigan. In the evening the first day a very successful dance was held. A weight-guessing competition produced keen competition, and Miss Irene Patterson and Mr C. Hammerton, who guessed the exact weight of 521 b. divided the money. On the second day Mr J. Armstrong guessed the exact weight, namely, 701 lbs.
