HALF-HOLIDAY QUESTION.

It has boon suggested that where no poll is taken, the day of tho weekly half-holiday can ho fixed by a conference of delegates. This point was submitted on Thursday to tho Wellington Town Clerk (Mr J. R- Palme. >, who states (says tho Post) that this opinion is quit© incorrect. Tho present position (of the Wednesday halfholiday) will remain for two years, and will then have to be decided, if a change is sought, by means of a poll. In tho interim, according to tho Act, nothing can bo done to alter tho position unless by way of legislation.

Whether the petition for taking a half-holiday poll in Eltham proves to bo regular or irregular does not appear to matter nowl (says the Argus), for it is certain that tho Saturday half-holiday will not ho agreed to. Some of those who were most keenly in favour of the Saturday half-holi-day have declared that they would not support it unless Stratford and Hawera were also closing on Saturdays. As that is not possible now, Saturdayclosing in Eltham is “ofl.” In connection with the local petition, tho Borough Council consider the matter at their meeting this evening.
