DEFENCE OF THE EMPIRE.

THE AUSTRALIAN FLEET. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] [United Press Association.] Melbourne, April 13. Referring to the Manchester Guardian’s article, Mr Hughes says that he was unaware that the question of the status of the Australian fleet had been officially raised. Other nations could, under international law, take cognisance of the distinctions recognised amongst the Dominions. To the outside world the Empire is one and its fleet one. Naturally the recognition accorded to the British fleet would be accorded to the Australian fleet. Technically Australia was as much a component part of the Empire as Ireland or Scotland.
